About Our School

Otahuhu Primary School is the oldest school in the Otahuhu district and celebrated its 150th Jubilee in 2008. We have a proud history of serving our students and community well.

Today we have over 600 students who attend our school and more than 50 adults working on our staff.

The school has a history, which extends back to 9 August 1858 when classes were conducted for the first time in a building belonging to the Church of England. Since that time there have been many changes which have seen the school change from a District High School catering for both primary and secondary school students to the primary contributing school it is today catering for Y0-6 students only. Today we have over 500 students who attend our school and more than 50 adults working on our staff. The school continues to serve a diverse community and students attending are mainly drawn from Pacific, Māori, and Indian cultural backgrounds. Students are offered bilingual programmes in the Māori, Samoan and Tongan languages.

Moth Pod Competition 2025
14 Mar 2025

Kia Ora OPS Whānau!

As part of our enviroschools education programme we are participating in the Pest Free South Auckland Moth Plant Pod Competition from the 3rd of March until the 9th of May. This competition involves collecting the invasive moth pods from the weed and bringing them to school to add to our collection. These pods will then be destroyed in a safe environment. Participants are also asked to cut the weeds and where possible, remove them from the ground (under adult supervision!).

All of our students are welcome to participate both at school and around the community, however they must have permission from a parent or guardian to take part. We are aiming to collect over 5000 of these pods to be in the draw to win prizes for our school.

Some important information:

  • Gloves should be worn when handling the weed or pods - we have some available at school.
  • All pods need to be returned to school in order to be appropriately composted. They cannot go in general waste or be left on the ground.
  • If you are unable to cut/remove a weed, you can contact PFSA@otarawaterways.org.nz, and share the property address with them. They will come to remove the plant for you.
  • Children should not climb trees or fences to reach the pods. Plants should be cut down to ground level, then the pods can be removed.
  • Wear old clothing when dealing with the plants, as there is a sticky substance on them.

IF YOU AND YOUR WHĀNAU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS COMPETITION THERE WILL PERMISSION SLIPS IN THE OFFICE. IF YOU RETURN YOUR SLIP TO THE OFFICE THEY CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH GLOVES AND GOGGLES.
