About Our School

Otahuhu Primary School is the oldest school in the Otahuhu district and celebrated its 150th Jubilee in 2008. We have a proud history of serving our students and community well.

Today we have over 600 students who attend our school and more than 50 adults working on our staff.

The school has a history, which extends back to 9 August 1858 when classes were conducted for the first time in a building belonging to the Church of England. Since that time there have been many changes which have seen the school change from a District High School catering for both primary and secondary school students to the primary contributing school it is today catering for Y0-6 students only. Today we have over 500 students who attend our school and more than 50 adults working on our staff. The school continues to serve a diverse community and students attending are mainly drawn from Pacific, Māori, and Indian cultural backgrounds. Students are offered bilingual programmes in the Māori, Samoan and Tongan languages.

Kia ora

We have completed our lockdown exercise and all students, staff and persons on-site are safely accounted for.  Everyone did extremely well and responded to instructions.  A notice will be going out to parents/caregivers tonight to provide some more information about our emergency lockdown procedures.

We thank you for your support while we conduct these practices.

Lockdown Exercise Today
22 Apr 2026

Dear Whānau,

As part of keeping our school safe we need to be able to respond safely and quickly to a range of emergency situations.

We work alongside an independent company, Harrison Tew® Ltd, who specialises in emergency management planning for schools, whose procedures have been successfully implemented in hundreds of schools throughout New Zealand.

As part of maintaining our emergency procedures in our school, specialised training is being conducted with our senior leadership and staff by Harrison Tew® Ltd today.

The students will also receive information on how to respond in an emergency directed at their respective age groups from either their teacher or Harrison Tew® Ltd.

Later today, we will be conducting a lockdown exercise under the guidance and support of Harrison Tew® Ltd.

During the exercise you will receive a notification from the school via Skool Loop and there will be updates on our website, so it is important that your emergency contact details are up to date and correct.  The notification will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website.

In a genuine incident, should you become aware of a lockdown or evacuation at the school, can I please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence or contact may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage a situation.

We thank you for your support.
